Chapter 6

Newbury glared at me as we trudged back towards the office. My mind was working overtime to think of a response to her question. I wasn’t sure I had the answer myself.

The streets bustled with activity, both humans and fae power-walking in every direction. A handful of fae even sped through the skies, flying high above on gossamer or feathered wings.

I opened my mouth, ready to admit to the crappy morning I’d had, but something strange caught my eye. Ahead, a stunning fae woman leaned against the red brick of a nearby building. Normally, seeing a pretty fae was as common as getting a cold in the winter, but there was just something out of place about her.

Maybe it was the long flowing dress, a gauzy white, that showed her delicate ivory lace underwear beneath. Fae fashion was usually more dramatic than most humans’ tastes, but even for them, this was a bit out there for a Monday lunchtime on the cold, grimy streets of London. Her towering, strappy heels were just asking to get stuck in a pavement crack.

Candy-pink hair flowed down to her hips, straight as an arrow. A prominent nose gave her a hawkish appearance, but made her no less attractive. Piercing silvery eyes locked on to my arm. The one with the mark.

My steps faltered, breath catching.

“Newbury… please tell me you see that woman staring at me. Candyfloss hair, net-curtain dress?” I whispered, my instincts screaming at me to run.

My friend halted beside me. “Urm… yeah. The tall beauty? She’s a royal bounty hunter. There’s a crown and dagger inked on her chest.” Her voice was filled with confusion. “But, why would a hunter be looking for—” Her mouth snapped shut with an audible snick of fangs, clear even over the constant buzz of city noise — honking cars, screeching bike brakes, the chatter of voices, and thudding footsteps.

Slowly, my friend turned to face me. People flowed around us like we were rocks in a river.

Her throat bobbed as she swallowed thickly. “Paisley…” Newbury’s sound came out pained. “Please tell me you haven’t received an invitation.” Her leaf-green eyes were wide beneath her creased brow.

“I…” It was my turn to swallow. “I’ve been Selected.”

All the air seemed to leave me in a rush. There. I’d said it.

But that wasn’t what made it real.

Like a ghost, the candy fae appeared beside us. “And one of the most promising Selected at that.” Her voice was strangely lyrical. “It was the old ways that called her to us.”

Newbury startled at the newcomer’s presence, but my heart was already working overtime, pounding away in my chest. My breathing came in little puffs, and I could barely get enough oxygen into my lungs.

“No.” Green waves flew as Newbury shook her head fiercely. “You can’t take her. She’s so young; practically a child!”

I was twenty-seven, but I appreciated her sentiment.

The willowy woman smiled, her pink lips curling into a pleasant curve. “Don’t be afraid, child of nature. Your friend will be celebrated.
